Ideal hardware for TileMill?
Hi, I was wondering what the ideal hardware for TileMill would be as a server...
If I had a computer with AMD Phenom II X6 1055T for example and 8GB of ram... can anyone here estimate how many users would be able to acces a relatively simple web-map at the same time whith such a server behind it?
best regards
desputin

Are you sure that you want to deploy TileMill for users accessing maps? TileMill's primarily a map design environment, and serves maps as a preview - that part of the application is optimized for being updated often, not for being accessed by many users at once. You'd probably be more interested in TileStream, which serves tiles and is more performant in that task.

Hi, thanks for the answer.
Where is the difference between tilemap and tilestream?
Is there a big difference in handling tilestream than handling Tilemap?

Hey Desputin,
As I said, TileMill generates maps from raw data, which is a hard thing to do quickly and for lots of people, and TileStream serves those pre-generated maps. There's a very big difference in server requirements between the two; TileMill predictably requiring more resources and power.

Thank you. Now I understand. So I'll install tilestream on the public server and import the tiles from tilemill.
Can you estimate how many users are able to acces a medium fancy map on a Tilestream server like I mentioned above?

Hi there,
I can't give you a firm number because I imagine there are several variables that impact performance, but I expect you'll find that it's quite fast. I'd recommend using ab to benchmark the server before going into production.
If you're concerned about performance, we have TileStream hosting plans available, which provide managed map hosting.
Thanks,
Will

Ok, thank you. I will benchmark it and see...
