map not showing
Hi,
I am using a ESRI shapefile which I am able to open in QGIS. When opening it in TileMill it doesn't show. I have added a layer, and tried both auto-detect and custom settings for the SRS. The shapefile itself is of a building, so it's rather small. And in order to localize where this building is on the map, I am manipulating the style for this layer using very thick lines etc. But so far either the map is not showing or I haven't been able to localize this building. The layer itself seems to load correctly, as I can see the data table behind this layer. It is a polygon layer.
Any idea on how to try to localize this building on the map or why it is not showing up?

Hi there,
Can you share the shapefile in question? It would help us debug the issue.
Thanks,
Will

Ah... I am afraid I cannot, since it's confidential... Are there some things
I could check myself?

Ah no problem. Is there any output in the TileMill log? Go to Window > Console and check the last few lines. Also, try explicitly setting the projection string based on the projection shown in QGIS.
To make sure you are looking in the right place, try using the project settings panel to set the center point and zoom level. You probably want the zoom level between 18 and 20.

Hmmm... no improvement yet... I see no messages in the log since server
startup, center is set explicitly, zoom level set, center point set, I also
set the line-width for this layer 10, which was my original attempt to
locate the building and the trick itself works as I have tested it with one
of the example maps, but so far, still no building visible...
Do you have any other suggestions perhaps?
Thanks anyway for your help!

Just want to let you know that I got something working now. I was under the
impression that for ESRI shape files you you should zip the 3 (or more)
files together and then open that zip file with TileMill, but now it appears
that I got it working just by referencing the .shp file. Is this correct?

Either way should work--TileMill should unzip the files if they are zipped. Is there anything odd about the filenames? Do they contain punctuation, spaces or capital letters?
Glad you made some progress!

Well the filename of the zip-file is SchipholSelection5.zip But do you mean
that it should be all lower-case?

Thanks, that filename looks valid. Is your map design working now?

I am still working with the .shp file directly, and that works just fine. I
haven't tried working with the .zip file anymore since this is working just
fine...

Great, glad it's working now. Please let us know if you run into other issues!
